- Training Goals and Dogs Learn Habits
 |
Our
goal is to help dog owners understand why dogs behave
the way they do and how to naturally encourage desired
behaviors by opening the lines of communication with
them through our training programs. We believe not
all canines are the same and each program is adapted
to maximize your canines learning ability. We keep
our classes small so your canine receives more individual
attention. "You will find my approach different
from traditional training programs; more fun and definitely
more rewarding. I base my training philosophy on pack
behavior despite their domestication." |
| Dogs
still rely on the basic instincts inherited from their
wolf ancestors to interact with the world. The "rules"
for establishing and maintaining a pack order are
the same for Fido as they are for the gray wolf in
the still-wild West. The key to building a strong
relationship with your dog is to establish yourself
as the leader of your pack. |
We
will teach you this natural "dog talk" - signals
and other control behaviors so you can better understand
why your dog does what he does and how to gain his respect.
"I believe a dog is more inclined to respond to reward-based
instruction reinforced on a daily basis." Our training
concepts can become a way of life for you and your dog.
It is our goal to be your pets’ dog trainer for
as long as you have a canine friend.

the Trainer:
- Tim Slattery “Dog Man”
 |
Tim
Slattery started training dogs as a hobby in 1972.
Early in 1990, Tim took his early dog training experience
to another level. An increased demand for his knowledge
and assistance spurred what is now known as North
Texas Hunting Retrievers. His early experiences
training innumerable dogs in both basic and advanced
obedience; allowed him to develop the additional
patience required when training gundogs and working
retrievers.
Throughout
his training career, Tim has been focused on learning
and creating a diverse approach to teaching all
canines and specializing in retrievers; utilizing
the current theory associated with animal science,
animal behavior and the latest in training technology.
Tim immersed himself into learning all he could.
He has had the opportunity to train |
| with
some of the best hunting retriever trainers in the
country, taking a little from each of them to tailor
what now is truly one of the best and most comprehensive
obedience and hunting retriever programs available
today. |
This
training program, along with Tim's vast training experience,
has ensured that hundreds of dogs have become better canine
citizens through his obedience program and over 60 dogs
have reached the AKC Master level through the “gun
dog and competition” program. Many of these dogs
reached that goal before the age of two years, and countless
dogs have achieved the Intermediate level titles of UKC
and AKC. Tim trained and titled his first AKC MASTER dog
in 1992. She was a personable hard driving female named
"Lizzie". Tim's desire to know and accomplish
more grew as he continued to train and earn titles. Tim
has qualified many dogs, some more then once to compete
in the prestigious MASTER NATIONAL held yearly at different
locations throughout the country.
Tim
has been seen on ESPN, CNN, and the OUTDOOR Channel hunting
and running finished dogs in the field, has been solicited
to compete in the Great Outdoors Competition, titled dozens
of dogs in the UKC and AKC organizations and spent countless
hours assisting in the rescue, training and placement
of stranded and stray dogs. He has been active in Collin
County SPCA and worked to change County Legislature regarding
animal nuisance. Tim spends a great deal of time teaching
novice handlers, holding training seminars and workshops
for hunt clubs, training organizations and individual
groups sponsored by Purina, Bumper Boy, Deerskin MFG and
Team Retrieve.Com
Spacious
training grounds at our kennel and throughout Texas,
Oklahoma and upper east Coast, allows Tim to expose
all hunting retrievers to numerous training situations
and hunting scenarios. Detail, confidence, and conditioned
responses are taught to every dog accepted into
his training program. His obedience program, serves
the Dallas metroplex year round. His demand for
perfection and his "owner" like relationship
with all dogs has resulted in on going years of
success.
In
2005, NTHR had more than 3000 dogs among its clients.

Testimonial

Sammy
& I love North Texas Hunting Retrievers. It is second
home for Shadow until she completes the working retriever
training program. My husband has always wanted a hunting
dog and very excited to see how far Shadow has come. Tim
really takes the time to teach not only our beloved Shadow,
but Sammy too. Not all trainers take the time Tim does
to explain and teach the owners what they need to be successful
with their dog in the field or at home. Client Training
Days are great. Thank You Tim!
